Comelec extends voting period to 7 p.m.

Comelec extends voting period to 7 p.m.

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - In a bid to solve the long queues and delays in the voting, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) extended the voting period by 1 hour.

Comelec chair Jose Melo said the voting period will end at 7 p.m., instead of 6 p.m. as originally scheduled.

The Liberal Party (LP), through its counsel Sixto Brillantes, actually asked the Comelec for a 2-hour extension, but the Comelec said the additional 1 hour would suffice.

Brillantes had wanted to file a motion for the extension of the voting period, but was told by the Comelec en banc that they would move for the extension motu proprio or on its own initiative.

Brillantes, however, said the Comelec might extend the voting by another hour if the need arises.

Initial reports from the field showed that many voters, frustrated with not finding their names and their respective precincts, opted to leave the polling centers without casting their votes.

The long queues and the heat have also prompted others to simply give up and go on with their ordinary activities.

This is the first time that the country is conducting nationwide poll automation. So far, Melo said voter turnout is encouraging. Historically, voter turnout in national elections is around 80 percent.

Meanwhile, Smartmatic spokesman Cesar Flores reported to the Comelec that more than 300 Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines failed to function, although these are being replaced.

In a news conference, Flores said 239 PCOS machines in different polling centers have been replaced while 89 “are in the process” of being replaced.

Long lines

Reports of confusion and irritation among voters poured in during the initial hours of the voting period. Voters in several areas endured long lines amid the scorching summer sun.

This is the first nationwide automated elections in the Philippines. Voters expected to spend only 7 to 8 minutes to cast their votes, but the long queues stretched waiting time up to 3 hours for some.

The long lines were the result of reduced number of precincts. There are only 76,347 precincts for the 2010 elections from the previous over 300,000 during the 2007 polls.

Five to 7 precincts were clustered into just one precinct, while voting hours were extended to 11 hours from the previous 8 hours.

These changes for the 2010 elections were based on the assumption that the poll automation project will speed up the voting process since voting will be via a precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machine. Each clustered precinct was expected to process around 1,000 voters. In previous manual polls, each precinct could only process 100 to 250 voters.

The voting period for the 2010 elections was originally set for 7a.m. to 6 p.m. In the past, voting period was only up to 3 p.m.

In this elections, however, the number of registered voters in the Philipines has hit 50.7 million, a record high.

The Comelec has awarded the P11.3 billion contract to automate the 2010 national elections to the consortium of Smartmatic and Total Information Management (TIM). - with reports from Ina Reformina, ABS-CBN News

Nganong naa may rainbow sa SUN karon?

Why is there a rainbow around the sun ?

You’ve all seen rainbows on those days where it's raining and the sun's out at the same time. But what about those times when you see a rainbow-like halo around the sun or moon?

It's the same physics, really. The halos (or, sometimes known as "sundogs" around the sun) are usually seen when there are high clouds overhead. Those clouds are made of tiny ice crystals, which will refract the sunlight much like a prism will. And voila! You have a rainbow halo around the sun. It works the same way with moonlight. It's usually a sign that rain is on the way, as high clouds usually precede a storm front.

Villar loses support among poor: survey

Erap ties NP standard-bearer for 2nd place

MANILA, Philippines—The new Pulse Asia survey conducted 2 weeks before the May 10 polls is double whammy for Nacionalista Party (NP) standard-bearers Senators ManuelIn the April 23-25 survey, Villar and Legarda plunged 5 points and 3 points, respectively.

With 2 points margin of error, that means Villar lost from 3 to 7 percentage points. At 500,000 voters per statistical point, the drop is equivalent to 1.5 million to 3.5 million votes.

The numbers of Liberal Party (LP) bet Senator Benigno Aquino III and Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) bet former President Joseph Estrada were steady. Their 2-point gains are within the margin error.

"We're not really surprised that President Estrada's ratings rose. We stuck to our strategy of going directly to the people, and they have realized that Estrada is the real leader of the poor,” said PMP spokesperson Ralph Calinisan.

“I think people are starting to realize…that Estrada is the real ally of the masses…. We’re winning back the D and E votes, which are really the Estrada votes,” said Navotas City Mayor Toby Tiangco, PMP spokesman in Metro Manila.

Aquino stays on top with 39 points. It’s 1-percentage point less than the combined numbers of Villar and Estrada, who are tied at 20 points.

Administration bet former Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. is stuck at 7 percentage points.

The undecided group is also steady at 9 percentage points. It’s equivalent to 4.5 million voters.

NP not discouraged

But NP spokesmen and senatorial candidates Adel Tamano and Gilbert Remulla said they are not discouraged by the survey results.

“Five points going down is not fatal. We are very confident hahabol kami (we are going to catch up),” Tamano told abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak in a phone interview.

“There is a false perception that Noynoy is going to win. I tell you, expect some surprises. This is going to be the longest 10 days,” he said. Tamano said the NP is counting on endorsements and their local machinery to deliver votes for Villar.

Remulla also accused the survey firm of being biased against Villar. “Pulse Asia surveys have never been kind to Senator Villar from what we believe is due to its ownership structure,” he told abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak in a mobile text message.

Aquino’s first cousin, Rapa Lopa, was former president of Pulse Asia. But Lopa has divested in the survey firm since Aquino joined the presidential race.

But Villar supporter political analyst Prospero De Vera acknowledges that the new survey is bad news.

“The numbers are bad. It’s the result of a concentrated black propaganda from both Erap and Noynoy camps. The attack has been so vicious in the past few weeks,” De Vera told abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak in a phone interview.

Binay’s dramatic increase

In the vice presidential race, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay has overtaken Legarda with his dramatic increase of 9 percentage points, or the equivalent of 4.5 million voters.

Binay registered 28 points compared to Legarda’s 20 points.

According to the analysis of Pulse Asia, the vice presidential race is now between Senator Manuel Roxas II of the Liberal Party and Binay. Roxas remains on top with 37 points.

But Roxas is already confident of the LP’s big win in May. “I am happy that Noynoy Aquino and I will become the next president and vice-president of this country. We pledge to pursue our commitment to reform our government so that our people can enjoy the fruits of good governance as this will result in true progress and development for all the peoples of this country,” Roxas said in a statement.

Noynoy gets poor, Erap gets Mindanao

Villar’s numbers show he is losing the support across the board—in all regional breakdowns and all socio-demographics.

Candidates’ gains and losses

Error margin
Aquino
Villar Estrada
Nationwide
2 2 -5 2
NCR 7 -3 -2 2
Balance Luzon 3 4 -5 1
Visayas 5 6 -7 3
Mindanao 5 -1 -7 5
ABC Not available -4 -1 -1
D Not available 2 -6 4
E Not available 3 -4 0
Villar is losing to Aquino and Estrada his support base among the poor.

Villar dropped 6-percentage points and 4-percentage points in classes D and E, respectively. Aquino gained 2 percentage points in Class D and 3 percentage points in Class E. Estrada gained 4 points in Class D.

The foundation of Villar’s campaign has always been his rags-to-riches story. He says that if he can get himself out of poverty, he can also do it for the rest of the Filipinos.

But this claim was put in question when various camps starting in March belied Villar’s poverty. (See Aquino joins ‘Villar is not poor’ chorus)

“Maybe the poor voters are getting confused. Probably they got confused by all these accusations,” said Villar supporter, De Vera. “Our messaging has been drowned out by negative attacks. It’s not anymore issues.”

By region, Villar is losing to Aquino his supporters in Balance Luzon and the Visayas. Estrada continues to shrink Villar’s support base in Mindanao.

In the March 2010 survey, Estrada registered a big gain in Mindanao at the expense of Villar.

Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, who is vice president for Mindanao of Estrada's PMP, said the supporters of Estrada are returning to his side after the Supreme Court’s decision in January 2010 to junk the disqualification case against him. (See Erap, not C-5, caused Villar’s survey drop)

The other candidates, including disqualified bet Vetellano Acosta, got 1 point to 3 points increases across the board.

Victim of black propaganda?

Villar’s camp said the surveys numbers are a result of a concentrated black propaganda against Villar.

“In the past few weeks, we have seen intensified black propaganda and vicious attacks from both the Erap and Aquino camps,” Remulla said.

“Jamby, si Erap, si Gordon, and the Liberal Party, they’re all hitting Manny [Villar] at the same time. There has been a flurry of negative campaigning. It’s below the belt,” Tamano added.

Among the key developments identified by Pulse Asia during the survey period are the following:

  • Defections from Lakas-Kampi CMD to NP and LP
  • Allegations made by Estrada and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile that while serving Senate President in 2007, Villar used his position to pressure the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) to decide in his favor on a matter concerning the public offering of his real estate company’s shares
De Vera assailed the LP camp for “concocting” the alleged “Villaroyo” alliance between President Arroyo and Villar.

“All evidence show that it’s (defections from Lakas-Kampi CMD) practically equal. And they got Albay Gov. Joey Salceda, the most notorious and most loyal adviser of President Arroyo. While he joined LP, he said he is still loyal to President Arroyo. What other proof of a distorted politician is that?” De Vera said. (See Lakas-Kampi defections: ‘Villaroyo’ or ‘Gloriaquino’?)

He also challenged Estrada to file a case against Villar in allegedly exerting his pressure on the PSE. “The PSE has cleared Villar. Why don’t they file a case?” he said.

Blaming the media

De Vera also laments what he calls “media’s bias” against Villar.

“It’s the black propaganda peddled through accusations in press conferences, the media, and the SMS. These have been driving the campaign since 2 weeks ago,” De Vera said.

“The Noynoy camp has a significant advantage in the media. They are backed up by ABS-CBN. They are also backed up by columnists, who hide behind their columns. Villar doesn’t have any of this,” he said.

In a press conference on Monday, Villar’s family also blamed the media for the negative stories on Villar (See Villar’s mom: Stop picking on my son)

While Villar has dominated political advertising in television and radio, Tamano said the ads are powerless against all the attacks.

“It’s very difficult to answer all allegations. It’s not one-on-one. It’s one side versus four,” Tamano said.

Tamano said in the remaining days in the campaign period, the NP will stress their message on competence. “The real debate should be who is most competent. If we go back to that, I believe we are going to get the undecided voters,” he said.

“Our voters have shifted to the undecided and we are doing all that we can to win them back. We believe there is enough time. Once that is done, it will be back to manageable levels and our party machinery will see us to victory,” said Remulla. (abs-cbnNews.com/Newsbreak) Villar Jr. and Loren Legarda.

Bea Alonzo is not bothered about being second choice for ‘Magkaribal’

It does not bother Bea Alonzo that she was only the second choice for the role in the upcoming soap opera Magkaribal, where she stars opposite Gretchen Barretto and Derek Ramsay. Bea did not hesitate to accept it after Claudine Barretto, who was first offered the role, transferred networks. “For me kahit na 50th choice ka, if it was offered to you, okay ‘yun sa akin,” explained Bea. “It’s not an issue for me kung second choice ganyan, no, not at all.”

However, she would rather stay out of the controversies that involve Gretchen and Claudine, who are both her friends. “I’m not in the position to talk and to judge, so I would rather stay silent,” she reasoned.

Aside from the teleserye, Bea will also soon start shooting for the family movie, Sa ‘Yo Lamang, which also stars Lorna Tolentino, Christopher de Leon, Erich Gonzales, and Enchong Dee. She said that she is already bracing herself because the two projects are expected to overlap production schedules.

Bea said that she is not new to overlapping schedules, which she used to do when she was younger. The bigger challenge for her is to switch from one character to another. She recalled that when she did a movie with John Lloyd Cruz, her managers at Star Magic decided for her to just focus on the movie which led to a more effective portrayal. “Mas na-enjoy ko siya (her character), mas na-own ko ‘to,” Bea shared. Having seen the difference, Bea requested not have any other project when she did her first solo movie, And I Love You So (2009), which earned her impressive reviews. “So talagang iba ‘yung effort na naibibigay mo kasi alam nila na nanggagaling (mismo sa characters ‘yung emotions),” she explained.

With Sa ‘Yo Lamang and Magkaribal, Bea may be back to shuttling between two projects but the actress is just grateful for the work. “Kesa sa magreklamo ka nang magreklamo dyan ‘yun naman ang positive side of it, you have a lot of work.”

Bea resolved to do her best and perform better this time. “Maybe what I’ll do is to play music sa car pa lang that would remind me of the character where I left it. ‘Yung mga ganon, ‘yung mga simple things na hindi naman magagawan ng paraan ng director para sa ‘yo na ikaw na ang gagawa para sa sarili mo.”

Angel Locsin reveals her birthday gift for Luis Manzano

Even though Angel Locsin has decided to be just friends with ex-boyfriend Luis Manzano, he’s still apparently very special to her with the way she is all smiles whenever she talks about him. Luis didn’t make it to her birthday bash cum launch of her resto-bar Fuel-Up last Friday, April 23, but Angel revealed that the actor-host surprised her with a very expensive gift the night before. “Napag-usapan namin [kung makakapunta ba siya] pero ayoko naman mag-force ng tao. Anong gift niya sa akin? Nakakahiya e. Kaya ayoko rin magkwento kasi mas effort yung gift niya kaysa sa gift ko kaya ayoko sabihin.”

But after much prodding, Angel finally shared that she gave him the latest mini hamburger speakers for his iPod and a cellphone for his birthday last April 21. “Kasi lagi niyang sinasabi sa akin noon na gusto niya ng ganon so binili ko tapos binigay ko sa kanya,” Angel said. “Sobrang happy naman siya dun sa binigay ko. Ganon naman yun e. Madali naman yun mapasaya, sobrang simple lang ng gusto niya. Actually masarap siyang bigyan ng regalo kasi kapag nakita niya, kahit hindi niya masyado gusto, matutuwa pa rin siya,” she added with a laugh.

While the 25-year-old actress is not dating anyone at the moment, she keeps herself busy by going out with friends during her spare time. She admitted though that Luis still visits her at home and they sometimes go out with friends but never alone on a romantic date. “Oo, in fairness, improving naman. Siyempre dati sobrang awkward kapag nag-uusap kami. Tapos ngayon napagtatawanan na namin yung mga bagay-bagay. Tulad ng lagi kong sinasabi, hindi naman magbabago e. He will always be special naman sa akin. I think ganon din naman ako sa kanya. Pero I know naman na kailangan din namin ng space sa isa’t isa.”

No one knows for sure whether they’ll get back together, but Angel is glad that Luis understands what she wants for herself right now. “Hindi namin madalas pag-usapan kasi ginagalang naman niya yung desisyon ko. Wala namang pressure. Yun nga, kasi hindi naman talaga ganon kadali ‘di ba? Basta ayos lang kami. Hindi ko alam kung anong status namin, pero hindi naman kami dating. Hindi naman ako nakikipag-date sa iba. And I think ganon din naman siya,” she beamed.

"People's Champ" Manny Pacquiao shoots for boxing glory when he faces World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Miguel Cotto on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

Pacquiao will attempt to become the first boxer to win a seventh title in seventh weight classes on Saturday in the "Firepower" match at the MGM Grand hotel and casino.

Aside from the WBO welterweight crown, Pacquiao and Cotto will be fighting for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Diamond belt in the 145-pound catch weight.

Pacquiao, 49-3-2 (37 knockouts), weighed in on Friday (Saturday in Manila) just a pound lighter than Cotto as the Filipino was greeted by deafening cheers from his supporters on the eve of the fight.

The Filipino dynamo tipped the scales at 144 pounds in front of a boisterous crowd of about 6,500 at the MGM Grand Hotel's Garden Arena.

Cotto, 34-1 (27 KOs), was right on the limit for the scheduled 12-round bout, which will be fought at a contracted weight of 145 pounds.

Although Cotto has won a world title every year since 2004 and will be competing in his natural division, Pacquiao is widely viewed as the favorite.

The atmosphere was electric as the two fighters made their way on to a raised stage for Friday's televised weigh-in where former boxing great Roberto Duran and undefeated WBO super bantamweight Juan Manuel Lopez were among those attending.

The 29-year-old Cotto will be fighting for the first time since he retained his WBO title with a split decision win over Ghana's Joshua Clottey in June.

Pacquiao, 30, last fought in May when he delivered a stunning second round knockout of Britain's Ricky Hatton at the MGM Grand to claim the IBO light welterweight crown.

Roach's plan: Big shots early

The first round of the fight will be dangerous for both fighters, and Roach said their plan is to hit Cotto with some big shots from the opening bell.

"I don't have to tell him the game plan anymore," Roach said. "It is automatic now. I make moves in training like Cotto makes in the fight. It is like a dance. He knows exactly what to do in those situations.

Roach says they can shake Cotto's confidence by hitting him early.

"We are going to start quick. We always start quick anyway."

"We are going to show our power in the first round and hit him to remind him of the punches he took in the (Antonio) Margarito fight."

"We are not going to go in and start swinging at him we are going to do it smart. We will walk Cotto into a fight because he follows and when he follows we will take advantage of that."

'We'll make him quit'

Roach said if the smaller Pacquiao doesn't have the power to knock Cotto out, then he can wear him down with his superior hand speed and lightning quick feet.

"I honestly don't think we are going to knock him out," said Roach. "We are going to make him quit."

"Manny's foot movement and speed is too much for Cotto. That's where the fight is won in foot speed and that is where Manny excels."

After watching hours of tape of Cotto in his most recent fights, Roach predicts he will do one of two things.

"He is going to use his strength and come forward and show us he is a bigger stronger guy or he is going to try to become a counterpuncher. But you can't become someone else in an eight-week period. We have a perfect game plan, I think."

What other boxers are saying about Pacquiao-Cotto

Pacquiao, regarded by many as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, expects to face the toughest challenge of his career against Cotto for the WBO welterweight title,

Some of the biggest names in boxing have been speaking about the hotly anticipated bout scheduled for 12 rounds:

* Former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, one of the most fearsome and notorious fighters of all time. "I pick Manny Pacquiao by knockout. I think he will knock him out in (round) seven or eight. Manny just has too much for Cotto."

* Felix 'Tito' Trinidad, a five-time world champion who ruled as a welterweight, junior-middleweight and middleweight. "Manny is a big puncher and a good boxer but he has never faced a natural welterweight like Miguel. Cotto is the most dangerous fight of Pacquiao's career and I think Cotto will win on a decision. He might even get a knockout."

* Former world champion Bernard Hopkins, who reigned supreme in the middleweight division for a decade. "Pacquiao is going to chop Cotto up. Cotto will get some rounds but Manny is the Bruce Lee of boxing. His basketball and martial arts background give him that speed and agility. You can't tell where his shots are coming from."

* WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley, who has won world titles in three weight divisions. "I think Cotto will win because he's a little bit bigger and is a real welterweight. His power may be enough to overcome Pacquiao's speed. I think Cotto wins in a decision."

* Britain's undefeated world super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe, who announced his retirement from the ring in February. "Manny Pacquiao is going to be too quick for Cotto. I was ringside when Cotto fought (Joshua) Clottey and he seemed to struggle a bit in that fight. Cotto is the bigger guy but I still think Pacquiao beats him in a decision."

* Former heavyweight champion George Foreman, whose famous fights included bouts with Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali. "Pacquiao has been riding high and has beaten some of the best in the world. And it leaves you kind of complacent when you're winning. Even if you don't want it to, sometimes you can't get up for a bigfight. And that's a plus for Cotto. I think Cotto wins in a 12 round decision. "

Boxing analysts speak their minds

Boxing analysts agree that the "Firepower" match will be a big test for both boxers. They also shared opinions on how the fight might play out.

* Ed Picson, Sports columnist. “Actually malaking sugal ito para kay Manny…Strategy dapat ni Manny umiwas siyang maipit sa ropes, sumayaw at sundutin si Cotto. He (Cotto) has a lot of power, lalo na sa simula ng laban. It’s important for Manny to test the patience of Cotto.”

* Manny Stewart, HBO commentator/boxing trainer. “One thing we keep forgetting about both guys, even though we think about their aggressiveness and punching power, they have also shown that they can box. Cotto has demonstrated that he can be a beautiful boxer if he wants,Pacquiao can box also, and when he chooses to box, his best asset is his foot speed and hand speed. ”

* Kevin Lole of Yahoo Sports. “I think it's going to be a terrific fight, but I favor Pacquiao because I think the speed is going to be too much for Cotto.”

* Keiran Mulvaney of Reuters. “I'm picking Manny Pacquiao simply because at the end of the day, I think his speed, the fact that he's so relentless and throws so many punches from so many different angles is going to be too difficult forMiguel Cotto .”

* Dennis Principe, sports analyst. “If he (Cotto) can force Manny to play the role of the challenger - 'Ako, habulin mo, I am the champion' - maganda, maganda chances ni Cotto. But if Cotto will fight the style of Manny, mahihirapan si Cotto.”

* Ronnie Nathanielsz, boxing analyst. “I think Pacquiao will go for the win early in the fight. The longer the fight goes, the stronger Cotto will get. His body punches might hurt Pacquiao. Cotto's strength is his left hook to the body. He’s got a decent right straight.”

* Teddy Atlas, boxing trainer/analyst. “He (Pacquiao) will need to box from the outside early on in the fight to establish a rhythm. Pacquiao seems to be the kind of guy that sets tones, he sets rhythms, and when he gets into a good rhythm, his offense flows like good music.”

Boxing to politics to boxing

Pacquiao has made no secret of his political ambitions outside the ring but dabbling in government isn't the same as taking it on as a full-time career, said Roach.

Roach said Pacquiao might run for office in his native Philippines, but after the fighter gets a taste of political life, Roach expects him to eventually return to his boxing roots.

"I would love to see him go out on top," Roach said. "The thing is he can fight for a long time, because his work ethic is so great.

"Once he gets into politics and finds out how corrupt it is he will come back to boxing. He can do more as a boxer than a politician for his countrymen. Although he's proven me wrong before." -- With reports from Reuters, Agence France-Presse, DogHouseBoxing.com and Dyan Castillejo and TJ Manotoc of ABS-CBN News

Amit now a world champ

From : Philippine Daily Inquirer
By : Cedelf P. Tupas

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines’ dominance in billiards is no longer limited to the men’s game.

Rubilen Amit became the country’s first women’s world champion in the sport last night when she stunned two-time world champion Liu Shin-mei of Chinese Taipei, 10-4, in the Jbet.net World Women’s 10-Ball Championship before a huge crowd at the Block at SM North in Quezon City.

A losing finalist in the world 9-ball championship two years ago, the 27-year-old from Mandaue City, Cebu made sure there was no heartbreak this time as she dominated Liu from start to finish.

“I can’t believe I won,” said Amit, who was close to tears as she received the trophy and the winner’s check of $20,000.

The victory put Amit in an exclusive club of Filipino world billiards champions that include Efren “Bata” Reyes, who won the world 9-ball championship in 1999 and 8-ball title in 2004, Alex Pagulayan, the world 9-ball in 2004, and Ronnie Alcano, who also captured the 9-ball and 8-ball crowns in 2007.

Amit capped a week of breakthroughs for the Philippines. Gillian Go, an 11-year-old sensation from Quezon City, made her international debut in the tournament, finishing in the top 24.

Amit got off to a fiery start, taking five of the first seven racks. But she needed all the tricks in her bag to hold off the Taiwanese veteran.

Ahead 8-4, Amit banked the cue ball twice before it guided the orange-five to the side pocket in what was easily turned out to be the shot of the tournament. On the hill, Amit made a break and run-out, sending the crowd of mallgoers into jubilation.

“She’s a two-time world champion and I could not afford to give her a chance,” Amit said of Liu, who beat Austrian Jasmine Ouschan, 9-6, in the semifinals.
